Flu Season

Flu Season

Many and many people are starting to get sick. I guess it is that time of the year: Flu Season. It has been all over the news and media lately that the flu is going around. The news has been hiring doctors to come to their studio and answer any questions people might have regarding the flu. They have said the best thing to do is to get the flu shot. When I was younger I would always get the flu shot. These past 2 or 3 years my sisters and I have not received the flu shot. My mom has read information on the internet that talks badly about the flu shot and the effects the shot could produce. This influenced my mom to have us kids not receive the shot. She thought that she would rather have us get the flu than possibly receive the effects from the shot.

We have been lucky that all three of us haven’t had the flu ever since we stopped receiving the shot. I find this kind of surprising because many people get the flu over the winter and neither of us has gotten it without a shot. You would think that if you didn’t get the shot, you would most likely get the flu, but not in our case. I don’t want to jinx my sisters and I but it really is weird that we haven’t been sick with the flu. By being around so many people all the time you would think we would.

There are things that you can do to prevent the flu. One like I stated earlier was to get the flu shot. Another big thing you can do is wash your hands multiple times a day. Shown on this website, it is very important to wash your hands. Also when you have to cough or sneeze, make sure you do it into your arm, not out in front of you. Not covering your cough or sneeze allows the germs to spread everywhere. It is amazing how far the germs can travel from your nose and mouth.

Also if you are sick with the flu or you just don’t feel good, don’t come to school. If you don’t go to a school then don’t go places that you will be around other people. By going to school or being with others you are making it very easy for others to get sick. Do the right thing and stay home.

I would say the main thing you should do if you want to prevent receiving the flu or getting sick is to wash your hands. Washing them multiple times a day not just after you go to the bathroom will be very helpful.

Teen Dating Violence

Teen Dating Violence

Question: Why do the film producers use this statistic in the documentary Miss Representation?

Like I have stated in an earlier post we have been watching a documentary called Miss Representation. During the video a statistic came up that said about 25% of girls will experience teen dating violence. On this website, it describes teen dating violence as the physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence within a dating relationship. Why did they decide to use this statistic? In this blog I hope to show you evidence and find the answer to this question.

Teen dating violence has really been starting at a very young age according to this website. It says that teen dating violence starts to occur at the age of 11 and ends around age 17. That is very sad to see that before you’re even a teen, you can be hit with dating violence. It doesn’t make much sense to me that an 11 year old is even in a relationship. One way to prevent teen dating violence is to have parents not let their kids “date” until they are a certain age. This is something that would really cut down the violence.
Obviously the film producers believe that teen dating violence is a problem and needs to be stopped. They put it in the documentary for people to see that it is a problem happening in the world. It isn’t just the film producers from Miss Representation that think teen dating violence is a problem. If you were to Google teen dating violence there are tons and tons of websites that show different statistics about it. It isn’t just a problem some people are worried about; many people are worried about it.
I think it has become a problem from the way you have been taught growing up. If a boy lives in a home that his father abuses his mother he is going to see that and possibly think it is ok to do. Whatever it is, this problem needs to come to an end.

Pinterest

Pinterest

Do you have a Pinterest account? I just recently signed up for Pinterest and I absolutely love it. Don’t get me wrong, I have been on Pinterest before just to look around but I just now got an account. I have always thought why would I need an account if I can see the same stuff the people who have an account can see. Now that I have a Pinterest account I see that there is a lot more to it than just looking at all the new cool things. You can “pin” or “like” something and it goes to your page so that you can refer back to it when you want.
If you’re not familiar with Pinterest there are a lot of different categories you can look at. You can look at stuff from animals to weddings. Pinterest is where you can find the coolest things. Many people find a lot of new ideas to do on this website. It provides so many different things you can do to anything it is amazing!
My personal favorite category on Pinterest is crafts and DIY (do it yourself). I think a lot of girls would say this is their favorite on Pinterest because there are so many crazy and cool ideas that you have never seen before that you can make. Most of the time I just look at the crafts because I feel like I never could actually have the patience and time to do them. Though, I am currently in the process of making one craft. I started it at the end of Christmas break and I haven’t had the time to finish it yet. The craft I’m making is a calendar that is on a picture frame. The picture to the right is what it will sort of look like after I am done.
If you want to make this all you have to do is put post it notes inside of the picture frame and then you can right on the outside. Instead of using post it notes I used sparkly scrapbook paper from Michaels. The hard part is measuring each piece of paper out and making sure they all fit inside the picture frame.
There are many other websites that have the “new” and cool ideas. If you click here, this website shows a number of other web pages you can go to for more ideas. If you haven’t checked out Pinterest I definitely would. You might become addicated but that is ok because that has been the case for many people J

Netflix

Netflix

A lot of teenagers these days are a member of Netflix. I am one of the odd teenagers that doesn’t have Netflix. I am actually very upset that I don’t have it. Everyone talks about watching certain TV shows on Netflix or movies that they watch daily. This makes me mad because I really want to see the TV show that everyone is talking about but I can’t because I’m not a member of Netflix.

It is funny to see how many tweets on Sunday that refers to Netflix. Many people know that Sundays are the days that people like to be lazy by watching movies or TV shows all day. Netflix becomes very handy on a day like Sunday. As I sit on my couch putting the DVD I want to watch into the TV, I see tweets that people are laying around watching Netflix all day. I would have to say that I read at least five Netflix tweets every Sunday. I will be honest; I do become very jealous when I see these tweets, especially when they talk about a certain show that I have never been able to see.

Now I don’t know a whole much about Netflix but I do know that there are a ton of TV shows and movies that you get to choose from anytime you want. There is a monthly fee for Netflix, but I am pretty sure the first month is free. I found this website that helps answer questions regarding Netflix if you want to check it out.

Sitting around all day on a Sunday watching Netflix is a dream of mine. I know that sounds very stupid but really though I want to just test it out one Sunday and see how it is to have Netflix. I have always wanted to have Netflix but I am not sure if I would use it all the time. I am busy throughout the entire week except some Sundays I have off. It would be pretty cool to have a whole bunch of time to sit around and get addicted to a Netflix show.

Also that is why I am a little questionable on whether or not to get Netflix. If I started a Netflix show I don’t think I would be able to get away from it. I know my younger sister is addicted to Vampire Diaries and she borrows some ones Netflix account so that she can watch it. Literally every night she is watching a new episode of Vampire Diaries. If I were to become addicted to one of the TV shows on Netflix I don’t think I would accomplish many things, considering I would be on the couch watching TV all the time in my free time.

Required Gym

Required Gym

Are you involved in athletics here at Kennedy? Well I think you would agree with me on this blog if you are. Starting this year the school decided that you could only use your academic waiver if you had a full schedule of 6 classes. I think this new “rule” is crap. Actually I would have to say it is only crap if you are involved in athletics.
For me I do not have a break of sports through out the entire year. I go from high school volleyball in the fall to high school basketball in the winter. In the spring I am playing club volleyball and club basketball. I am active every single week of the year in one of the two sports, if not both.
Right now I have 5 classes with first hour off so that I can babysit Mr. Steckers daughter. I am not involved in a high school sport in the spring so I technically have to be in a gym class because I don’t have a full schedule. This is what makes me mad. I am not a person that needs to exercise during the school day when I am going to have a club practice of some sort after school that day.
Now if I weren’t to play any club sports or be active outside of school, I think requiring students to take a gym is acceptable. But when you have student athletes taking a gym every day and then practicing later that night, they become very warn out. It becomes to be too much on the student athletes.
If I were to have to be in a gym class I would choose the lifting class. Since I am not involved in a high school sport in the spring I would stay after school and lift every other day anyways. I think it would be better if I weren’t in the class just because then I wouldn’t have to come every day and I then I would get to work on the lifts that I need to work on.
I hope this new “rule” is changed fast because it is starting to make me very angry.

Public Display of Affection

Public Display of Affection

Hands off of each other, seriously though. Like that is disgusting. This is what I say to myself every, and I mean every single day in the hallways at Kennedy High School. We have a serious problem here with PDA, public display of affection. It is so bad that it’s starting to get disgusting.
When I walk through the halls at Kennedy I shouldn’t be disturbed or be afraid to what I am going to see, but too be honest I am. There are certain areas of the school where there is always people making out and then you get the occasional couple kissing right in front of you before you walk into class. Both of these things need to stop because this is school, not your home.
I found that in this article, Strauss stated in the first paragraph that it is not only the adults in the building who are getting embarrassed and annoyed from PDA. I would totally have to agree with this statement. There are many people in the school that aren’t involved in PDA and are very annoyed from it. Actually me personally I’m not just annoyed, I am embarrassed also. These teenagers who are involved in PDA are setting a bad rep for all teenagers. Also it is very embarrassing to say that your school is involved in extreme PDA.
About a month ago I heard that a teacher caught two students having sex in the black box. This is not only extremely embarrassing for the two students caught but for the rest of the student body and teachers also. It doesn’t make sense to me at all. I have found PDA more and more every year.
I don’t understand why these people can’t just hang out at their homes and do what ever they want there. Maybe some parents are strict about relationships and don’t let their kid hang out with their significant other. All I am saying is don’t do it at school; too many people are here watching it all happen.

Women in the Media

Women in the Media

Over the past couple days in class we have talked about how women are portrayed in the media and how it affects teenagers and young adults. We watched a little bit of a video called Miss Representation that did a good job showing how the way women in the media look, affect the way how young teenagers want to look. After watching some of the video I found a couple different claims. Do I agree with the claims? Yes and no.

Each different story we watched in Miss Representation, they all talked about how young teenage girls want to look or act like the women in the media. This is what I disagree with. Why do they happen to think that all teenage girls want to be like these women in the media? I know that there are a lot of girls that are upset about their appearance like shown in this survey here, but then there are girls out there that don’t care at all. Most of the time, the girls that don’t care are the ones overweight. Notice I said most of the time. I know that some girls that are overweight try very hard to lose weight but most overweight teenagers don’t do anything about it.

What I said earlier about reporters thinking all teenage girls want to be like the women in the media is not very fair. By them not saying not every teenage girl does this bothers me because I know that some girls do not even care about the looks of women in the media. I mean every person that sees a nice body or pretty makeup on a woman in a magazine is going to comment on it, saying “Wow she has a nice body” or “Look how pretty her makeup is”, but just because they say that doesn’t mean it’s going to change the way they want to look.

One clip that was shown in the video was this women was expecting a baby girl and she was saying how she doesn’t want her little girl to turn out how the young girls are now a days. Throughout the video she used ethos and pathos. Ethos were used by trying to make herself look good. Pathos were used because there was a lot of emotion in the video and making people watching the video feel bad for her. She said in the video that her sister died at a young age and that she felt like she had to act as two daughters since her parents lost one. But really how does that have anything to do with her not wanting her daughter to be like the girls today?

I do believe that the majority of teenage girls aren’t happy with their body which is messed up. Something does need to be fixed about it because most of the girls that aren’t happy with their body are the girls that are perfectly fine, not over weight or anything. The girls that are happy with their body should be the ones trying to lose weight. This video does a good job showing young adults how reality TV should not affect the way you want to look. If you haven’t seen the video, I would recommend watching it.
