Decisions...Decisions

Decisions...Decisions

Choosing a college is the next huge step in my life. I have started taking visits to colleges this past summer. I would really recommend visiting colleges in the summer going into your junior year and the spring of your junior year. It is annoying to visit a college in the summer because all of the students at the college are at home, but it is also the easiest time to set up a visit. That is a downfall of visiting a college in the summer because then you aren’t able to see what the campus is like when students are there.

I have visited four colleges total including William Jewel, Rockhurst, Upper Iowa, and Cornell. I really enjoyed Rockhurst, Upper Iowa, and Cornell. Rockhurst is in Kansas City, Upper Iowa is in Fayette, and Cornell is in Mount Vernon. If I were to attend one of these schools, I would play either basketball or volleyball there. Playing a sport in college can really help bring down the cost of the school if you are wanting to attend a Division one or two college but if you attend a Division three college they are not allowed to give you sport scholarships.
I most recently have visited Cornell, which was yesterday. I really enjoyed the coaches at that school and what their attentions are for me playing for their program. Also I liked the small classroom sizes and class schedule. They only take one course at a time for three and a half weeks. This caught my eye for a good thing and a bad thing. I think it would be nice because only having to focus on one class would be awesome, especially when playing a sport. The bad thing about taking one course at a time is if you fail the first test, it is hard to get your grade up because you only have eighteen days to do so.
Also another good thing about the small class sizes is if you want to ask your teacher questions, you are more than welcome to do so. The professor will know everyone in the classroom by name. It isn’t like a huge university, where there are three hundred plus students in a class and the professor doesn’t even know who their students are. The average class size at Cornell is about seventeen students. The maximum number of students in a class would be twenty-five.
I am a student that wants to be able to go up to the teacher after class and ask questions or ask for help. I wouldn’t be able to do that at a big university like Iowa. This is something huge for students to think about when deciding where to go. Many teenagers say they are going to go to University of Iowa or Iowa State but they haven’t even gone on other college visits. That is really stupid because there are so many great colleges out there in the United States.
I would extremely recommend visiting colleges if you are a current sophomore or junior. The more colleges you visit, the more variety you will have to choose. It is better to go on more than one visit to see what is out there then just go on one visit and pick that one. Everyone get your butts off the couch and go explore! It is the next big step in your life…
